Xiaomi (HKG: 1810, OTCMKTS: XIACY) is preparing to take a major step forward in its electric vehicle (EV) ambitions, with the official unveiling of its first SUV, the Xiaomi YU7, scheduled for May 22 at 7:00 PM Beijing time. The debut will take place during the company’s strategic new product launch event, which also commemorates Xiaomi’s 15th anniversary.
The YU7 marks Xiaomi EV’s second vehicle and is widely anticipated as a direct challenger to Tesla’s Model Y in China’s fiercely competitive electric SUV market. According to regulatory filings, the YU7 measures 4,999 mm in length, 1,996 mm in width, and 1,600 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,000 mm—larger overall than Tesla’s updated Model Y.
In addition to the YU7, Xiaomi will also unveil several major tech innovations at the event, including its first mobile system-on-a-chip (SoC), the Xring O1, alongside the Xiaomi 15S Pro smartphone and the Xiaomi 7 Ultra tablet. The company is clearly signaling its intention to integrate smart technologies across its ecosystem—from handheld devices to vehicles.
The launch comes at a pivotal time. Xiaomi entered the EV market with the launch of its first model, the SU7 sedan, on March 28, 2024, aiming to compete with Tesla’s Model 3. The company followed up with the SU7 Ultra on February 27, a performance-enhanced version delivering an eye-popping 1,548 Ps of horsepower.
Despite being a newcomer in the EV sector, Xiaomi EV has seen strong early success. As of May 1, the company announced over 28,000 units delivered in April, marking the seventh consecutive month of deliveries exceeding 20,000 units.
However, recent weeks have brought challenges. Public scrutiny intensified after a fatal SU7 crash in late March that claimed three lives. Compounding the issue, a surge of user complaints about SU7’s build quality has surfaced on Chinese social media, leading to a slowdown in sales momentum. According to insurance registration data compiled by CnEVPost, Xiaomi EV recorded 5,180 registrations in the week ending May 11—an 8.96% drop from the previous week and the third consecutive week of declines.
The pressure is on for Xiaomi to reaffirm consumer confidence and prove its staying power in China’s EV space. With the YU7, Xiaomi is not just launching a new vehicle; it’s making a statement about its long-term ambitions in mobility, smart technology, and beyond.
As the event approaches, all eyes will be on how Xiaomi positions the YU7 and whether it can navigate the pressures of rapid growth and rising scrutiny in the world’s largest EV market.

Exciting times for Xiaomi! The YU7’s arrival marks a courageous leap into the EV arena. Can’t wait to see how it competes with the giants! Cheers to innovation and growth!
