On January 29, the industry insiders released the “2023 China Game Overseas Research Report.” The report indicates that in 2023, the global gaming market reached 1,177.37 billion yuan, showing a year-on-year growth of 6%. After experiencing negative growth in 2022, the growth rate turned positive again, but the scale did not surpass the peak of 1,193.87 billion yuan in 2021.
Pony Ma, Chairman and CEO of Tencent, stated that gaming is Tencent’s flagship business, and taking games global is currently Tencent’s biggest hope for internationalization. In recent years, Tencent has demonstrated certain advantages and built a good reputation in the overseas development and operation of mobile games from major IP gaming companies. Tencent aims to horizontally penetrate and solidify its presence in software and game development rather than engaging in direct confrontations in a vertical perspective with other gaming companies or hardware manufacturers. The key strategy is to identify its core business and focus on it for a more promising outcome.
