JD.com, China’s largest retailer by revenue, has just taken a major step to enhance the offline shopping experience for global travelers. The company announced the official launch of an in-store tax refund service, now available across over 100 JD locations in 39 Chinese cities, including tourist hotspots like Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Guangzhou, and Hangzhou.
Targeting foreign visitors shopping in China, JD.com is offering up to 9% tax refunds on eligible purchases of RMB 200 or more made at designated stores. Travelers simply need to present valid identification at one of 106 tax refund-authorized JD MALL and JD Electronics & Appliances City Flagship Stores on the same day of purchase. These locations are now formally recognized as tax refund-eligible outlets under China’s policy for overseas shoppers.
According to a JD MALL spokesperson, the rollout includes multilingual signage, bilingual in-store announcements, and clear tax refund guides designed to simplify the process for non-Chinese-speaking customers. International shoppers can either collect their items in-store or have them delivered directly to their hotels for free, adding an extra layer of convenience.
This move reinforces JD.com’s commitment to bridging online and offline retail by delivering seamless, tech-integrated experiences for global consumers. The initiative aligns with the company’s broader strategy to grow its brick-and-mortar retail footprint, combining immersive shopping with smart logistics and digital tools.
Visitors will be able to choose from more than 50,000 SKUs across 100+ product categories, ranging from household goods and beauty products to consumer electronics and smart devices. JD.com reports that portable, high-tech gadgets such as smartphones, laptops, drones, robotic vacuum cleaners, smartwatches, projectors, and even electric toothbrushes are especially popular with overseas buyers.
This tax refund program marks a significant effort to boost spending from inbound tourism while reinforcing China’s image as a global smart retail destination. As international travel into China gradually recovers, JD.com’s service could provide a competitive edge over both traditional department stores and cross-border e-commerce platforms.
For tourists eyeing both value and authenticity in their purchases, JD.com offers a powerful proposition, tax savings, reliable products, and digital-first service, all under one roof.

What a fantastic initiative by JD.com! Offering tax refunds while enhancing the shopping experience is a win-win for international travelers. Who knew shopping could be this rewarding?
