China’s New Energy Storage Capacity Surpasses 100 Million kW, Powering a Greener Future

China’s new energy storage capacity has officially surpassed 100 million kilowatts, marking a major milestone in the country’s transition toward a modern, green, and technology-driven energy system. This achievement reflects the nation’s rapid progress in renewable energy innovation and the strengthening of its industrial and technological ecosystem.

The announcement was made at the sub-forum on high-quality development of new energy storage, held during the Eighth Hongqiao International Economic Forum in Shanghai on November 5.

Building the World’s Most Comprehensive New Energy System

According to Song Hongkun, deputy director of the National Energy Administration (NEA), China has successfully built the largest and fastest-growing renewable energy system and the most complete new energy industrial chain.

Song emphasized that new energy storage—characterized by flexible deployment, rapid response, and short construction cycles—has become an essential enabler of China’s new-type power system.

“By the end of September, China’s new energy storage installations had surpassed 100 million kW, becoming a vital part of the new-type power system,” Song said.

This achievement demonstrates China’s strategic ability to integrate clean energy with technological advancement, driving the nation toward a low-carbon, high-efficiency energy future.

Thirtyfold Growth Since 2020

Bian Guangqi, deputy director-general of the NEA’s Department of Energy Conservation and Technology Equipment, reported that China’s new energy storage capacity has increased more than 30 times since 2020. The country now accounts for over 40 percent of global installed capacity, highlighting its technological and industrial leadership in this field.

Bian noted that the sector has evolved from its early commercialization stage into large-scale, high-quality development, showing steady progress in technological innovation, industrial upgrading, business models, and application scenarios.

He added that emerging technologies, such as solid-state batteries and hydrogen energy storage, are developing rapidly. These innovations are providing strong technical support for multi-level, safe, and efficient energy storage, a cornerstone of future power systems.

A Trillion-Yuan Industrial Boost

Since the beginning of the 14th Five-Year Plan (2021–2025), China’s investment in new energy storage projects has exceeded 200 billion yuan (about US$28 billion). This investment has already driven over 1 trillion yuan of industrial chain development, boosting related sectors such as battery manufacturing, grid equipment, and digital energy management.

This large-scale investment is not only transforming China’s energy landscape but also stimulating economic vitality, creating new industrial opportunities, and fostering technological innovation across multiple sectors.

Song noted that China’s achievements in this field have “demonstrated strong momentum in developing new quality productive forces and advancing the modernization of the energy system.”

Innovation and Cooperation Driving the Energy Future

Looking ahead, the National Energy Administration will further strengthen support for technological innovation in new energy storage, cultivate emerging productive forces, and accelerate progress toward national carbon goals.

The forum also saw growing international interest in cooperation with China’s renewable energy sector. Laureano Ortega Murillo, presidential advisor on investments, trade, and international cooperation for Nicaragua, praised China’s achievements and expressed interest in deeper collaboration on solar and hydropower initiatives.

“We’ve already collaborated with Chinese energy enterprises on solar and hydropower projects. We hope to explore more opportunities for cooperation with China based on these existing partnerships,” Ortega said.

China’s rapid progress in new energy storage showcases the nation’s technological strength, industrial coordination, and commitment to sustainable growth. As large-scale energy storage becomes a crucial part of its modern power system, China continues to build new engines of economic development, expand high-tech industries, and lead the global transition toward clean energy.

This milestone not only strengthens China’s energy security but also reinforces its position as a pioneer in green innovation, driving both economic resilience and technological excellence in the era of sustainable development.
