China’s E-Commerce Sector Maintains Strong Growth Momentum in 2025

China’s e-commerce market continued its steady expansion in the first seven months of 2025, driven by rising digital consumption and deepening integration between industries and online platforms. According to the Ministry of Commerce, online retail sales climbed 9.2% year-on-year from January to July, underscoring the sector’s resilience amid a shifting global economy.

Digital gadgets proved to be one of the strongest growth engines. Personal computer sales surged 29.9% year-on-year, while smart wearables rose 28.4%, reflecting a growing appetite for upgraded devices and trade-in programs. These trends highlight how Chinese consumers are prioritizing digital lifestyle upgrades and keeping pace with rapid innovation in the tech sector.

Online service consumption also expanded at a robust pace. Travel-related online spending jumped 24.8%, catering increased 16.6%, and cultural entertainment rose 11% compared with the same period last year. This surge reflects a post-pandemic rebound in services and the growing reliance on digital platforms for lifestyle and leisure consumption.

The Ministry of Commerce emphasized that closer cooperation between industries and e-commerce platforms has significantly expanded sales channels for diverse products. Notably, transaction volumes rose 14.5% for agricultural products, 7.9% for electronics, and 6.5% for textiles year-on-year. This signals that e-commerce is no longer confined to consumer goods but increasingly serves as a powerful channel for traditional industries.

Cross-border e-commerce also posted remarkable growth, bolstered by the Silk Road e-commerce cooperation initiative, which has promoted thematic trade events, partnership programs, and industry matchmaking across markets. Chinese platforms helped showcase and sell foreign products to domestic consumers, leading to sharp gains in imports from partner countries. For instance, online sales of Egyptian essential oils skyrocketed 179.2%, while Uzbek confectionery rose 104.7% during the period.

Taken together, the data illustrates how China’s e-commerce sector is not only supporting domestic consumption but also strengthening international trade linkages. With technology adoption accelerating, consumer demand diversifying, and cross-border channels expanding, the sector is poised to remain a cornerstone of China’s digital economy in the second half of 2025.
