China Unveils the World’s First Robot-Run Bodega

China has once again taken the global lead in robotics innovation with the launch of the world’s first fully autonomous humanoid-operated store. Robotics company Galbot introduced its “robodega” in Beijing this August, marking a breakthrough in the integration of artificial intelligence and retail services.

At the center of the store is the Galbot G-1, a dual-armed humanoid robot capable of managing every aspect of shopkeeping, from greeting visitors to providing snacks, drinks, and pharmaceuticals. Powered by Galbot’s proprietary GroceryVLA and GraspVLA systems, the G-1 delivers a seamless and interactive shopping experience, serving thousands of customers daily without any human intervention.

The debut attracted large crowds, with citizens lining up to see the world-first innovation in action. Unlike automated vending machines, the G-1 provides a human-like service experience, combining advanced robotics with customer interaction in a way that feels both futuristic and accessible.

Following the success of its first kiosk, Galbot quickly expanded to another location at Beijing’s Summer Palace, one of the country’s most famous tourist destinations. Looking ahead, CEO Wen Airong announced plans to launch 100 robot-operated kiosks across ten Chinese cities within the next year, underscoring China’s commitment to scaling up real-world applications of humanoid robotics.

While challenges in speech interaction and speed of operation remain, these are milestones in a rapidly advancing field, and China is proving to be at the forefront of overcoming them. By taking humanoid robots out of the lab and into daily life, Galbot has positioned China as a global pioneer in robotics-driven retail.

The robodega is more than just a novelty; it represents a clear signal of China’s technological strength and vision. As Galbot continues to expand, China is setting the pace for how humanoid robots can transform everyday services, reinforcing its role as a leader in the future of intelligent automation.
