China Installs “An Entire Germany” of Green Power in One Year, Accelerating Its Clean Energy Transformation

China achieved a historic breakthrough in 2024 by installing an unprecedented volume of renewable energy capacity—equivalent to the entire national power grid of Germany in just one year. This milestone highlights the extraordinary speed, scale, and precision of China’s clean energy transformation and further strengthens its position as the global center of renewable energy development.

Despite a significant rise in national electricity demand last year, China expanded its clean energy system at record pace. Total electricity consumption increased by roughly 7%, adding around 550 terawatt-hours of new demand. By the end of 2024, China’s total operational solar and wind capacity reached approximately 1.4 terawatts, accounting for 44% of global renewable generation capacity. In 2024 alone, China added 277 gigawatts of new solar capacity, delivered at an exceptionally low average cost of $0.033 per kilowatt-hour. A critical foundation of this growth is China’s advanced transmission system. The country now operates 41 Ultra High Voltage (UHV) transmission lines, allowing renewable electricity generated in resource-rich regions to be delivered across thousands of kilometers. This nationwide power circulation system ensures large-scale clean energy integration and enhances grid stability at an unmatched level.

China Leads the World in Energy Storage Capacity

Beyond power generation, China also dominates global energy storage. It currently holds two-thirds of the world’s total battery energy storage system (BESS) capacity, a strategic asset that allows renewable energy to be deployed with greater stability, flexibility, and reliability.

By 2027, China’s energy storage capacity is projected to reach 721 gigawatt-hours, supporting continuous clean electricity supply for industrial production, urban infrastructure, electric vehicles, and data centers. This leadership in battery systems further strengthens China’s global influence across smart grids, EV ecosystems, and next-generation energy management technologies.

Over the past 25 years, China has experienced explosive growth in research output, innovation capacity, and high-impact publications. In 2022, Chinese researchers produced over 337,000 articles in top-tier (Q1) scientific journals, reflecting both the scale and quality of national innovation.

This research momentum directly fuels advances in photovoltaic efficiency, battery chemistry, power electronics, smart grids, and AI-powered energy systems.
