DeepSeek Surpasses ChatGPT to Top U.S. Apple App Store Free Charts, Sparking a New AI Revolution

DeepSeek, a Chinese AI-driven application, has recently made headlines in the United States by surpassing OpenAI’s ChatGPT in popularity. Over the past weekend, DeepSeek climbed to the top position in the Apple App Store’s free app rankings, solidifying its breakthrough in the U.S. market.

This surge in popularity has been attributed to the release of DeepSeek’s open-source reasoning model, R1. Despite a relatively modest training cost of $5.6 million, R1 has demonstrated performance levels comparable to, or even surpassing, OpenAI’s models on various AI benchmarks. Unlike ChatGPT, which requires a $200 premium to unlock its full features, DeepSeek offers its services completely free of charge, adding to its appeal.

The buzz surrounding DeepSeek has extended well beyond the tech community. Social media platforms are flooded with discussions featuring hashtags like “Goodbye ChatGPT” and “Building Everything with DeepSeek.” Prominent figures, such as venture capitalist Marc Andreessen, have also publicly praised R1 as one of the most remarkable AI breakthroughs. Moreover, the phrase “DeepSeek is just a small project,” a response to questions about the company’s monetization strategy, has gone viral, further fueling the app’s momentum.

DeepSeek’s success has sparked a wave of replication efforts. HuggingFace, a leading platform in the AI community, launched the “Open R1” project on GitHub to replicate and open-source R1, including its training data and scripts. Within just two days, the project attracted over 4.2K stars, reflecting the global interest in this technology. HuggingFace has outlined a three-step plan for the project: distilling high-quality corpora to reproduce the R1-Distill model, replicating the reinforcement learning pipeline used to build R1-Zero, and transitioning from a foundational model to a reinforcement learning version through multi-stage training.

In addition to replication, users are finding innovative applications for DeepSeek. Tutorials on building games, developing programming tools, and other creative uses have emerged, further demonstrating the model’s versatility. This enthusiasm highlights China’s rapid progress in AI development, with DeepSeek being hailed as a “national treasure.”

Prominent AI researcher Yann LeCun has also commented on the trend, emphasizing the shift towards open-source models outperforming proprietary ones. As the tech world continues to delve into the implications of DeepSeek’s advancements, its long-term impact on the industry remains a topic to watch closely.
